Out-of-state car buying

Found the car three states away? Know before you fly out.

62% of our customers buy a car they’ve never seen in person. We send a local, vetted inspector to the vehicle — dealer lot, private driveway, or auction yard — and you get a photo-documented report in 24–48 hours, before you book a flight, wire a deposit, or arrange transport.

What you’re actually risking by buying sight unseen

A local buyer can walk away from a bad car in five minutes. An out-of-state buyer has already spent money — on a flight, a rental, a day off — before finding out the car wasn’t what the listing promised.

You can’t test-drive it first

Every red flag a local buyer catches on a test drive — a pull to one side, a slipping transmission, a check-engine light the seller cleared — you’d otherwise find out after you already flew out or the car is on a truck.

Photos hide what matters

Seller photos are lit, angled, and taken to sell the car. They don’t show frame rust, mismatched paint depth from a repaint, or a fault code sitting in the ECU. An inspector on-site does.

The trip itself is the risk

A plane ticket, a rental car, and a day off work — spent before you know if the car is worth buying. An inspection report arrives before you book any of it.

Wiring money on trust alone

Long-distance private-party deals often ask for a deposit or full payment before you ever see the car in person. An independent, dated report is the only leverage you have to walk away and get your deposit back if the car isn’t as described.

How a sight-unseen inspection works

01

Send us the listing

Paste the listing URL or the seller’s address at booking. We match a local inspector to the vehicle’s actual location, not yours.

02

An inspector goes to the car

Dealer lot, private driveway, or storage unit — the inspector meets the vehicle where it sits. No trip for you required.

03

You get a photo report in 24–48 hours

Every finding documented with photos, a plain-English go / caution / stop summary, and the same core inspection every vehicle gets.

04

You decide before you travel or pay

Book the flight, wire the deposit, or arrange transport once you know what you’re actually buying — not before.

What the inspector checks, every time

The same full inspection runs at every price point — tiers differ by measurement depth, not by what gets looked at. Starting at $249, or $349 for the Silver tier’s instrumented tests (battery load, brake measurement, A/C readings).

  • Condition of the body and paint, including evidence of prior repair or respray
  • Scratches, cracks, dents, and rust
  • Underbody check for rust, frame damage, or structural repair
  • Condition of tires and wheels, including tread depth
  • Glass examined for cracks, chips, and other flaws
  • Evidence of previous accident damage or flood damage
  • Lights, A/C, gauges, and operation of all other electrical items
  • Interior throughout — upholstery, mats, headliner, and seat belts
  • Motor and transmission
  • All driveline components, including 4-wheel and all-wheel-drive systems
  • Steering, suspension, braking components, and exhaust system
  • Visual inspection of the engine and everything else under the hood
  • Fluid levels, oil leaks, and any missing parts
  • OBD-II scan with any stored trouble codes (1996 and newer)
  • Any additional areas of concern you identify when you book
  • Road test evaluating the drivetrain — where the vehicle is street legal, insured, and weather conditions are safe
  • Photo-documented PDF report with a plain-English go / caution / stop summary

Common questions

Do I need a pre-purchase inspection if I’m buying a car out of state?
Yes — arguably more than a local purchase, because you can’t test-drive or inspect it yourself before committing to travel or payment. A mobile inspector goes to the vehicle’s location (dealer lot, private seller’s driveway, auction yard) and sends a photo-documented report within 24–48 hours, so you decide before you fly out or wire money. 62% of Vehicle Inspectors’ customers buy out of state for exactly this reason.
How does a sight-unseen inspection actually work?
You send us the listing (or just the seller’s city and state) when you book. We dispatch a local, vetted inspector to the vehicle’s location — you never need to be there. The inspector runs the full inspection on-site, photographs everything, and the report lands in your inbox, typically within 24–48 hours of the visit.
What if the seller won’t let an inspector come out?
That’s a red flag worth weighing on its own. Legitimate sellers — dealers and private parties alike — agree to a buyer-paid, independent inspection routinely; it costs them nothing and it’s often the thing that gets a deal to close. If a seller refuses outright, ask why before you send a deposit.
Can you inspect a car before I book a flight to go see it?
Yes — that’s the exact use case. Most out-of-state buyers book the inspection first, then book travel or arrange transport only after the report confirms the car is worth pursuing. It usually costs far less than a wasted trip.
What happens after the inspection if I decide to buy?
You use the report to negotiate the price if issues turn up, or to move forward with confidence if it’s clean. From there most out-of-state buyers arrange transport rather than fly out — we connect you with vetted carriers who already know the vehicle’s condition because we inspected it.
