Carvana Car Inspection: Do You Need an Independent One?
You do not have to, but an independent inspection is worth it if you want facts before Carvana’s 7-day return window closes. Carvana’s Certified program page (archived copy, 2026-10-06) says you can return a car for any reason within 7 days of delivery, for a refund less shipping fees. Our advice is to use that window: an inspector looks at the car where it is parked, and the photo report arrives within 24–48 hours of the visit.
Vehicle Inspectors is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Carvana. The name is used only to describe the car you are buying.
What does Carvana say about its inspection and return window?
These are Carvana’s own words, with the source and date. Carvana may have changed its pages since, so confirm the current terms on carvana.com before you rely on them.
Facts on this page were last checked on 2026-10-31.
The inspection
“All our Carvana Certified vehicles undergo a 150-point inspection, and have no reported accidents, fire, frame, or flood damage according to CARFAX™ and AutoCheck®.”
Source: Carvana’s Certified program page, read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-06. The claim is scoped to Carvana Certified vehicles and to reported history. The same page adds that history reports are based on information from many sources and that other information about the vehicle may not have been reported.

The return window
“This guarantee will give you the ability to return the vehicle to Carvana for any reason and receive a refund, less shipping fees, within 7 days of delivery.”
Source: Carvana’s Certified program page, read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-06. Carvana’s annual report for 2025 (10-K, filed 2026-02-18) also refers to its “seven-day return policy”.

The limits
Carvana’s help center has an article titled “What are the limits of the 7-Day Money Back Guarantee?”. Read that article before you drive the car much, and ask Carvana what “less shipping fees” means for your order.
Do you need an independent inspection on a Carvana car?
You do not have to get one, but it is worth it if you want facts before Carvana’s 7-day return window closes. The two checks answer different questions. Carvana’s tells you what Carvana says about the car it is selling. An independent pre-purchase inspection tells you what a person with no interest in the sale finds on the car in front of you. The same difference applies to any seller’s program, as the page on dealer certified vs independent inspection explains.
| Carvana’s inspection | Independent inspection | |
|---|---|---|
| Who performs it | The page we read does not say who performs it. | A vetted local inspector with no interest in the sale, dispatched by a company that does not sell cars. |
| What the claim rests on | A 150-point inspection and, for “no reported accidents”, CARFAX and AutoCheck records. Carvana’s page says these records may not include everything. | What the inspector sees, measures and photographs on the day of the visit, including evidence of prior repair or respray. |
| Which cars it covers | Carvana Certified vehicles, according to Carvana’s page. | Any car, at its address, whether or not it is Certified. |
| Who receives the result | The page we read does not say what a buyer receives from the inspection. Ask Carvana. | You. A photo-documented report goes to you. |
Carvana says it offers a 7-day return window. Our inspection does not replace it. It gives you facts to use inside it.
How does an inspection fit inside the 7-day window?
This schedule is our advice, not Carvana policy. The Carvana pages we read do not address third-party inspections, so check Carvana’s terms. The timing is tight, so book the day the car arrives.
- Day 0
The car is delivered
Carvana’s annual report says it offers home delivery in its markets and, in certain markets, pickup at a vending machine or another location. Carvana’s page counts the 7 days from delivery, so write down the date.
- Day 0
Book the same day
Book the day the car arrives, using the address where it is parked. Your card is saved, not charged. Mention in the booking that the car came from Carvana and when it was delivered.
- Days 1 to 3
The inspector visits
Dispatch typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the market. The visit runs 60 to 90 minutes on Bronze and Silver and 90 to 120 minutes on Gold.
- Up to 48 hours later
The report arrives
A photo-documented report with a plain-English go / caution / stop summary arrives within 24–48 hours of the visit.
- Before day 7
You decide
Keep the car or start a return with Carvana. The return is between you and Carvana. We do not start, file or manage it.
Dispatch of up to 72 hours plus a report within 48 hours can add up to five days, which leaves two of the seven. If no inspector accepts the job within 72 hours, the request closes automatically and your saved card is never charged. By then three days are gone, which is why booking on day 0 matters.
What does the inspector check that a history report cannot?
A history report lists what was reported. The inspector looks at the car itself. The report includes 25+ photos, and you can add a CARFAX report when you book.
Body and paint
Panels, gaps and paint are checked for evidence of prior repair or respray. A history report only lists what was reported; the panels show what the car looks like now.
Underbody and structure
Visible underbody, frame and suspension mounting points are checked for rust, damage and structural repair.
Tires, brakes and suspension
Tread depth, wear patterns, braking components and steering and suspension are checked and photographed.
Engine, drivetrain and fluids
A visual check of the engine bay, fluid levels, leaks and missing parts, plus the drivetrain on a road test where it is safe.
Electrical and interior
Lights, A/C, gauges, electrical items and the interior throughout, including upholstery, headliner and seat belts.
Stored fault codes
An OBD-II scan reads stored trouble codes on 1996 and newer vehicles.
What does an independent inspection not do?
Knowing the limits helps you read the report correctly. Vehicle Inspectors reports condition and nothing else.
No lift, no teardown
The inspector does not put the car on a lift or take anything apart, so a problem inside a sealed component can stay hidden.
No repairs and no warranty
The inspector reports what is found. The report is a dated record of condition, not a warranty, and it does not predict future failures.
No return decision
The report does not decide whether you can return the car. That is Carvana’s process, under Carvana’s terms.
No title or registration check
The inspector cannot certify that a title is clean, that the car can be registered, or that a seller is honest. Confirm those with your state DMV.

Common questions
- Does Carvana inspect its cars, and what does the 150-point inspection cover?
- Carvana says all of its Carvana Certified vehicles undergo a 150-point inspection (Carvana’s Certified program page, read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-06). It also says they have no reported accidents, fire, frame, or flood damage according to CARFAX and AutoCheck. The page we read does not list the 150 points. “Reported” matters: the same page says history reports are based on information from many sources and that other information may not have been reported.
- Do I need an independent inspection on a Carvana car?
- An independent inspection is worth considering, because Carvana’s inspection is Carvana’s own statement about its car, and an independent one is done by someone with no interest in the sale. An independent check also happens after the car reaches you, and the report goes to you. If the car is low priced and you are comfortable with the risk, you can skip it. The 7-day return window is a real protection. An inspection is a way to use it with facts.
- How long do I have to return a Carvana car?
- Carvana’s Certified program page says you can return the vehicle to Carvana for any reason and receive a refund, less shipping fees, within 7 days of delivery (archived copy dated 2026-10-06). The Carvana page we read gives no mileage or condition terms. Carvana’s help center has a separate article on the limits of that guarantee, so read it and ask Carvana what “less shipping fees” means for your order, before you rely on a return.
- Can I get a Carvana car inspected inside the 7-day window?
- Yes, you can book an inspector for a car you have received. This is our advice, not Carvana policy. The Carvana pages we read do not address third-party inspections, so check Carvana’s terms. Our suggested plan is to book the day the car arrives. Dispatch typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the market, and the report follows within 24–48 hours of the visit. That can add up to five days, which leaves few spare days inside seven. If no inspector accepts the job within 72 hours, the request closes automatically and your saved card is never charged. By then, three of your seven days are gone.
- Can the car be inspected before it is delivered or at a vending machine?
- Carvana’s 2025 annual report says it offers home delivery, typically by a Carvana employee on a branded hauler. It also says customers in certain markets can pick up at one of its car vending machines or another customer-facing location. We have not confirmed with Carvana whether an outside inspector may see a car before delivery. We recommend inspecting after the car arrives, inside the return window.
- How much does an independent inspection of a Carvana car cost?
- Vehicle Inspectors publishes three flat tiers: Bronze $249, Silver $349 and Gold $449. All three cover the same systems and the same 25+ photos. Silver adds instrumented tests and Gold adds paint-depth readings and live OBD-II data. Your card is saved at booking and charged after the inspection is completed. If you cancel after an inspector has scheduled your inspection, a $149 cancellation fee is charged to your card on file. No fee if you cancel before an inspector schedules, if your inspector cancels, or if we can't find you an inspector.
- What if the inspection finds a problem?
- The report is yours, and the decision is yours. Carvana’s page says a return can be for any reason. Check Carvana’s limits article before you rely on that. The return itself is between you and Carvana and we do not start, file or manage it. We cannot tell you that a return will be accepted. If the report finds nothing serious, you keep a dated record of the car’s condition on the day of the visit.
Vehicle Inspectors is not affiliated with Carvana. Carvana, CARFAX and AutoCheck are names of their owners and are used here only to describe where the car comes from and the reports named on this page.
