CarMax Car Inspection: Is Their 125+ Point Check Enough?

CarMax’s checklist is CarMax’s own statement about the car, so an independent look is worth adding if you can use the 10-day return window. CarMax says it offers a 10-day return window for a car whose condition is consistent with when you bought it (CarMax article dated April 29, 2026, archived copy, 2026-10-13). Our advice is to use that window: an independent inspector looks at the car where it is parked, and the photo report arrives within 24–48 hours of the visit.

Vehicle Inspectors is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by CarMax. The name is used only to describe the car you are buying.

What does CarMax say about its checklist, return window and warranty?

These are CarMax’s own words, with the source and date. We read archived copies of CarMax’s pages, dated below. CarMax may have changed them since, so confirm the current terms at the store or on carmax.com before you rely on them.

Facts on this page were last checked on 2026-10-31.

The checklist

“Each car undergoes a detailed 125+ point checklist by our trained technicians, and we’ll repair, replace, or detail anything necessary to meet our standards.”

Source: CarMax, as published on carmax.com (article dated April 29, 2026), read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-13. The same article says every car CarMax sells is CarMax Certified, “which means no flood or frame damage and no salvage history.”

The return window

“As long as the vehicle’s condition is consistent with when you purchased it, you can bring it back within 10 days to the store where you purchased it…”

Source: CarMax, as published in CarMax’s FAQ, read from an archived copy dated 2025-11-15. The FAQ adds: “any shipping fees paid to transfer the vehicle are separate from your purchase and nonrefundable.” CarMax’s annual report (10-K for the year ended 2026-02-28, filed 2026-04-15) also describes a 10-day money-back guarantee.

The limited warranty

“Every vehicle sold drives off the lot with a 30-day limited warranty. In CT, MN, and RI, it’s 60 days/3,000 miles (whichever’s first), and in MA, NJ, and NY it’s 90 days/4,000 miles (whichever’s first). See store for details.”

Source: CarMax, as published on carmax.com (article dated April 29, 2026), read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-13. The 90-day, 4,000-mile terms apply only in MA, NJ and NY. Read the warranty terms at the store before you rely on them.

Is CarMax’s 125+ point check enough?

It may be, if the price is low and you accept the risk. It is still CarMax’s own check, so it answers a different question from an independent pre-purchase inspection. CarMax’s checklist tells you what CarMax did to the car it is selling. An independent inspection tells you what a person with no interest in the sale finds on the car in front of you. The same difference applies to any seller’s program, as the page on dealer certified vs independent inspection explains.

How does an inspection fit inside the 10-day window?

This schedule is our advice, not CarMax policy. CarMax’s return condition is that the car is consistent with when you purchased it, so book the day you buy and ask the store what it checks on a return.

  1. Day 0

You buy and take the car

CarMax’s annual report says customers can buy a vehicle fully online. Ask the store how the 10 days are counted, and write down the purchase date.

  2. Day 0

    Book the same day

Book the day you buy, using the address where the car is parked. Your card is saved, not charged. Mention in the booking that the car came from CarMax.

  3. Days 1 to 3

    The inspector visits

Dispatch typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the market. The visit runs 60 to 90 minutes on Bronze and Silver and 90 to 120 minutes on Gold.

  4. Up to 48 hours later

    The report arrives

A photo-documented report with a plain-English go / caution / stop summary arrives within 24–48 hours of the visit.

  5. Before day 10

    You decide

Keep the car or take it back to the store where you bought it. Leave time for the drive back. The return is between you and CarMax; we do not start, file or manage it.

Dispatch of up to 72 hours plus a report within 48 hours can add up to five days, which leaves five of the ten. If no inspector accepts the job within 72 hours, the request closes automatically and your saved card is never charged.

Can an independent inspector look at the car before you buy it?

Ask the store. None of the CarMax pages we read address outside inspectors, so we do not state a policy. CarMax says it will hold a selected car for a limited time. It says this can be ahead of an in-store appointment or test drive or while the car is being shipped, with no obligation to buy (archived copy, 2026-10-13).

For a car moved to a store from elsewhere, CarMax says that once it arrives you can inspect it thoroughly before making a final decision (archived copy, 2026-10-13). That sentence describes you, not an outside inspector. Shipping fees paid to transfer a vehicle are nonrefundable, according to CarMax’s FAQ (archived copy, 2025-11-15).

If you are buying from another state, read the out-of-state car buying inspection page.

The inspection

What does the independent inspector check?

The inspector looks at the car itself and documents it with 25+ photos. You can add a CARFAX report when you book.

Body and paint

Panels, gaps and paint are checked for evidence of prior repair or respray, including repairs made before the car was listed.

Underbody and structure

Visible underbody, frame and suspension mounting points are checked for rust, damage and structural repair.

Tires, brakes and suspension

Tread depth, wear patterns, braking components and steering and suspension are checked and photographed.

Engine, drivetrain and fluids

A visual check of the engine bay, fluid levels, leaks and missing parts, plus the drivetrain on a road test where it is safe.

Electrical and interior

Lights, A/C, gauges, electrical items and the interior throughout, including upholstery, headliner and seat belts.

Stored fault codes

An OBD-II scan reads stored trouble codes on 1996 and newer vehicles.

What does an independent inspection not do?

Knowing the limits helps you read the report correctly. Vehicle Inspectors reports condition and nothing else.

No lift, no teardown

The inspector does not put the car on a lift or take anything apart, so a problem inside a sealed component can stay hidden.

No repairs and no warranty

The inspector reports what is found. The report is a dated record of condition, not a warranty, and it does not predict future failures.

No return or warranty decision

The report does not decide whether CarMax accepts a return or covers a repair. CarMax confirms the car’s condition itself, under its own terms.

No title or registration check

The inspector cannot certify that a title is clean, that the car can be registered, or that a seller is honest. Confirm those with your state DMV.

Common questions

What is the CarMax 125+ point inspection?
CarMax says each car undergoes a detailed 125+ point checklist by its trained technicians. It says it will repair, replace or detail anything necessary to meet its standards (as published on carmax.com in an article dated April 29, 2026, read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-13). The same article says every car CarMax sells is CarMax Certified, which it describes as no flood or frame damage and no salvage history. The page we read does not list the points.
Is the CarMax inspection enough, or do I need an independent one?
It may be enough if the price is low and you accept the risk, but it is CarMax’s own check, done by the seller against the seller’s own standards. An independent inspection is done by someone with no interest in the sale, after the car reaches you, and the report goes to you. CarMax’s 10-day return window (CarMax FAQ, archived copy dated 2025-11-15) is a real protection. An independent inspection is a way to use it with facts.
How long is the CarMax return window?
CarMax’s FAQ says it offers a 10-day money-back guarantee. As long as the vehicle’s condition is consistent with when you purchased it, you can bring it back within 10 days to the store where you purchased it (archived copy dated 2025-11-15). The FAQ also says any shipping fees paid to transfer the vehicle are separate from your purchase and nonrefundable. Ask the store how the 10 days are counted and what it checks when you return the car.
What limited warranty does CarMax include?
CarMax says every vehicle sold has a 30-day limited warranty. In Connecticut, Minnesota and Rhode Island it is 60 days or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. In Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York it is 90 days or 4,000 miles, whichever comes first (as published on carmax.com, read from an archived copy dated 2026-10-13). CarMax adds “see store for details”, so ask for the written terms. A limited warranty has its own coverage and exclusions, and an inspection report is not a warranty.
Can I bring my own mechanic or inspector to a CarMax store?
Ask the store. None of the CarMax pages we read address independent inspections, so we do not state a policy. If the answer is no, you can still book an inspector for after you buy, at the address where the car is parked, inside the return window.
How much does an independent inspection of a CarMax car cost, and how long does it take?
Vehicle Inspectors publishes three flat tiers: Bronze $249, Silver $349 and Gold $449. All three cover the same systems and the same 25+ photos. Dispatch typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the market, and the report follows within 24–48 hours of the visit. If no inspector accepts the job within 72 hours, the request closes automatically and your saved card is never charged. Your card is saved at booking and charged after the inspection is completed. If you cancel after an inspector has scheduled your inspection, a $149 cancellation fee is charged to your card on file. No fee if you cancel before an inspector schedules, if your inspector cancels, or if we can't find you an inspector.
What if the inspection finds a problem inside the 10 days?
The report is yours, and the decision is yours. Taking the car back is between you and CarMax, and CarMax confirms the car’s condition itself, so we cannot tell you that a return will be accepted. Take the report to the store when you ask about a return or about repairs under the limited warranty. Whether CarMax covers anything is CarMax’s decision. We do not start, file or manage returns or claims.
Can I return a CarMax car after an independent inspection?
The CarMax pages we read do not say an outside inspection affects a return, and we have not confirmed it with CarMax. CarMax’s FAQ (archived copy dated 2025-11-15) says you can bring a car back within 10 days to the store where you bought it if its condition is consistent with when you purchased it. Our inspection takes nothing apart, but the road test adds miles, so ask the store what it checks on a return. The return is between you and CarMax.

Vehicle Inspectors is not affiliated with CarMax. CarMax is the name of its owner and is used here only to describe where the car comes from.
