eBay Motors Car Inspection: Check It Before the Auction Ends

Get an eBay Motors car inspected before the auction ends or before you pay, because eBay itself says to inspect the car in person or hire a third-party inspection service. Its Vehicle Purchase Protection also excludes damage that could have been discovered upon a reasonable inspection when you pick up the car in person. An inspector goes to the car, and the photo report arrives in 24–48 hours, from $249.

What does eBay say about inspecting a car?

eBay itself says to inspect the car in person or hire a third-party inspection service (eBay Motors buying help page, read 2026-10-31). The points below, most of them from eBay’s own materials, explain why an independent look at the car is the step to add. Source pages are linked in the sections that follow. Check them for current wording, because eBay can change its terms.

eBay recommends one

eBay’s Motors buying help page says to inspect the vehicle in person if you can and, if that is not possible, to have a vehicle inspection service visit the vehicle to make sure it is as described in the listing. It also says eBay strongly recommends that you physically inspect the car or hire a third-party inspection service to evaluate the vehicle’s condition (page read October 31, 2026).

The protection terms mention inspection

Vehicle Purchase Protection excludes damage that could have been discovered upon a reasonable inspection when you paid for and picked up the car in person. eBay’s page does not say how this applies to a car you buy from another state.

The program does not pay for the inspection

You pay for the inspection. eBay’s page lists inspection costs among the things its program does not reimburse.

The listing is the seller’s presentation

Photos and descriptions come from the seller. An independent inspector reads the VIN, documents condition and tells you whether the car matches the listing before you commit.

What does eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection cover?

Per eBay’s page (read 2026-10-31), it reimburses up to $500,000 per eligible transaction from 2026-08-01, limited to the purchase price, for qualifying problems such as undisclosed damage over $1,000 in repairs. It excludes damage a reasonable in-person inspection could have found. The terms below are summarized from eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection page, as read on October 31, 2026. This is a summary and not the full terms. eBay’s page is the authority on what is covered.

Facts on this page were last checked on 2026-10-31.

The limit: up to $500,000 from August 1, 2026

eBay’s page states that the maximum reimbursement under Vehicle Purchase Protection is $500,000 per eligible transaction, and that the amount you may receive is limited to the purchase price. For transactions completed before 12:01am PT on August 1, 2026, the page says the maximum was $100,000.

Where the protection applies

The buyer, the seller, the vehicle on the purchase date and the financial institutions making and receiving the payment must all be located in the US or Canada, according to eBay’s page.

Secure Purchase must be used where it is offered

For US vehicles, eBay’s page says the transaction must be completed through Secure Purchase, which eBay describes as its checkout for vehicles, when that option is available on the listing.

The undisclosed-damage rule

eBay describes undisclosed damage as pre-existing engine, transmission, body or frame damage affecting safety or use, with repairs over $1,000, and says it is not available for vehicles under an open recall. eBay’s page marks this line with a footnote that reads “Applies to vehicles under 20 years old.”

Deadlines and limits on claims

eBay’s page says the request must be your first reimbursement request under the program in the last 180 days. It also says documents are due within 14 days of the request and no later than 45 days after the listing end date.

From eBay’s terms

What does Vehicle Purchase Protection not cover?

These four exclusions, quoted from eBay’s page, are the ones that bear on inspection. Vehicle Inspectors cannot say how eBay would apply them to a particular claim. What an inspection can do is show you the problem before you pay, when you can still negotiate or decide not to buy.

  • “Any damage that could have been discovered upon a reasonable inspection in the event you paid for and picked up the vehicle in person.”
  • “Inspection costs, warranty fees, taxes paid, or any other fees or expenses that are not expressly covered under these terms and conditions.”
  • “Buyer’s remorse.”
  • “Transactions occurring off-eBay or on any other website.”

What does eBay say about paying a seller?

eBay’s wording on wires is “use caution”, and this page uses the same words. The quotes come from eBay’s Motors red-flags page and security page. For private-party sales on other sites, see the Craigslist and OfferUp inspection page.

  • “Use caution when direct bank transfers and wire payments are being requested by a seller”, and, in eBay’s words, “especially prior to receipt or pick up”. (eBay Motors red-flags page)
  • “It’s also always a good idea to inspect the vehicle in person before sending any money.” (eBay Motors red-flags page)
  • “To ensure your safety and security, always conduct your transactions on eBay.com and our mobile apps.” (eBay Motors security page)

What is Secure Purchase?

eBay describes Secure Purchase as its checkout for vehicles. eBay’s help page states that “Secure Purchase is powered by Caramel Dealer Services LLC, an eBay subsidiary.”

eBay Inc. announced on January 13, 2025 that it had signed an agreement to acquire Caramel, and said in a later release that it acquired Caramel as of February 6, 2025. For US vehicles, Vehicle Purchase Protection requires Secure Purchase when it is available on the listing. Vehicle Inspectors does not handle the payment for the car.

How does an inspection before the auction ends work?

Timing is the constraint. Dispatch, the seller’s schedule and the report all take time, so book as soon as you find the listing. Read the listing’s own terms for its end time. For online enthusiast auctions on other sites, see the Bring a Trailer and Cars & Bids inspection page.

01

Book when you see the listing

Paste the eBay link at booking, or enter the car’s city and state. Choose a tier. Your card is saved, not charged. The earlier you book, the more time there is before the listing ends.

02

The inspector contacts the seller

We match a vetted local inspector, who contacts the seller to set a time. Dispatch typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the market. You do not travel and you do not need to be there.

03

The inspector checks the car

The inspector reads the VIN, documents condition with 25+ photos and runs the road test where it is legal and safe.

04

Report in 24–48 hours

You get a photo report with a plain-English go / caution / stop summary. Set your maximum bid or your offer from the report. If the listing ends before the report arrives, you decide without it.

Buying a car in another state is common on eBay Motors. The inspector is local to the car, so you do not travel until the report says the car is worth the trip. The steps are on the out-of-state car buying inspection page, and the mobile pre-purchase inspection page explains how the visit works.

What does the inspection not cover?

An inspection lowers risk and does not remove it. Decode the VIN first with the free VIN lookup, add a CARFAX report if you want one, and see the pre-purchase inspection page for what the inspector checks on every car.

No claim decisions

Vehicle Inspectors cannot say whether a Vehicle Purchase Protection claim would be accepted or what counts as a reasonable inspection. That is eBay’s decision under its own terms.

No title or registration check

The inspector cannot certify that a title is clean, that a lien is cleared or that the car can be registered. Confirm those with your state DMV.

No lift, no teardown

The inspector does not raise the car on a lift or take anything apart. A problem inside a sealed component can stay hidden.

No warranty

The report is a dated record of condition on the day of the visit. It is not a warranty and it does not predict future failures.

No money, paperwork or shipping

Vehicle Inspectors does not hold your payment, file paperwork or ship the car. For transport, see the vehicle transport page; the buyer contracts with the carrier directly.

Which tier should you pick?

Prices are flat, so the cost does not change by city. The full list is on the pricing page. The comparison page shows how other inspection services price and charge. Classic and exotic inspections are each quote-based, from $449.

Buying somewhere else, or from another state?

The inspection works the same wherever the car is listed. These pages cover the details that differ.

Vehicle Inspectors is an independent inspection service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by eBay or Caramel.

Common questions

Should I get an inspection before buying a car on eBay Motors?
Yes. eBay’s Motors buying help page says to inspect the vehicle in person if you can, or have a vehicle inspection service visit the car. It also says eBay strongly recommends that you physically inspect the car or hire a third-party inspection service. A mobile inspector goes to the car wherever it is and documents condition with photos. The report arrives in 24–48 hours, so you can decide before the auction ends or before you pay.
Does eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection cover a car I did not inspect?
It can cover some problems, but not all. eBay’s page says the program covers up to $500,000 per eligible transaction. The page says the program excludes damage that a reasonable inspection could have found when you paid for and picked up the car in person. It also excludes buyer’s remorse and transactions off eBay. Vehicle Inspectors cannot say whether a particular claim would be paid. Read eBay’s current terms before you buy.
Is eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection enough without an inspection?
eBay’s page, read 2026-10-31, says Vehicle Purchase Protection excludes damage that could have been discovered upon a reasonable inspection when you paid for and picked up the car in person. It also excludes inspection costs and buyer’s remorse, and it limits reimbursement to the purchase price (up to $500,000 per eligible transaction from 2026-08-01). Vehicle Inspectors cannot say whether a claim would be paid, so treat the program as a backstop, not a check on the car’s condition.
How much does eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection cover, and does it pay for the inspection?
eBay’s page says the maximum reimbursement is $500,000 per eligible transaction for purchases completed from 12:01am PT on August 1, 2026. It also says the amount you may receive is limited to the purchase price. For earlier transactions the page says the maximum was $100,000. The page lists inspection costs among the expenses that are not covered, so you pay for the inspection; eBay’s page lists inspection costs among the things its program does not reimburse.
Can I get the car inspected before the auction ends?
Only if the listing has enough days left and the seller agrees. Dispatch typically takes 24 to 72 hours depending on the market, the seller has to agree on a time, and the report follows within 24–48 hours of the visit, so allow up to five days. Ask the seller as soon as you find the listing. If the listing ends before the report arrives, you bid without it. We cannot promise any seller will allow a visit. If a seller refuses a visit, treat that as a risk signal.
Is it safe to pay an eBay Motors seller by wire transfer?
Treat a wire request with caution. eBay’s Motors red-flags page (read 2026-10-31) says to use caution when a seller requests direct bank transfers and wire payments, especially before receipt or pick up. It does not say never. It also says it is always a good idea to inspect the vehicle in person before sending any money. eBay’s security page says to always conduct your transactions on eBay.com and its mobile apps, and the Vehicle Purchase Protection terms exclude transactions off eBay. Our advice, not eBay’s: never pay through an escrow service the seller introduces. Vehicle Inspectors never holds your money.
What is eBay Secure Purchase, and who runs it?
eBay’s page describes Secure Purchase as its checkout for vehicles and says Vehicle Purchase Protection for US vehicles requires it when it is available on the listing. eBay’s help page states that Secure Purchase is powered by Caramel Dealer Services LLC, an eBay subsidiary. eBay Inc. said in a release that it acquired Caramel as of February 6, 2025.
How much does an eBay Motors car inspection cost?
Vehicle Inspectors publishes three flat tiers: Bronze $249, Silver $349 and Gold $449. All three include the same 25+ photos, and Silver and Gold add measured tests. Classic and exotic inspections are each quote-based, from $449, and each has its own page. Your card is saved at booking and charged after the inspection is completed. If you cancel after an inspector has scheduled your inspection, a $149 cancellation fee is charged to your card on file. No fee if you cancel before an inspector schedules, if your inspector cancels, or if we can't find you an inspector.

Have an inspector look at the car before the listing ends.

Vetted mobile inspectors in all 50 states, flat published tiers from $249, photo report in 24–48 hours. Your card is saved at booking and charged after the inspection is completed.
