Pre-Purchase Inspection in Austin: EVs, Leases, Hail

Buying used in Austin? What our inspectors check on EVs, lease returns, hail repair, Hill Country undercarriage damage and I-35 brake wear. From $249.

Key takeaways

  • A battery state-of-health reading is the key number on a used EV.
  • One owner and dealer service records do not prove a lease return is sound.
  • Hill Country roads can scrape skid plates and hide damage under plastic undertrays.
  • Hail repair around Round Rock and Cedar Park shows up in panel paint-depth readings (Gold tier), and paintless repair can still be missed.
  • Texas no longer requires most safety inspections, and we do not offer state inspections.
  • Out-of-state buyers can ask for an inspector to meet the seller in Austin, Round Rock or San Marcos, depending on inspector availability.

What makes buying a used vehicle in Austin different?

Austin's used market skews newer, with many EVs, late-model crossovers and lease returns. You will see a lot of them coming off the tech corridor.

That mix changes what can go wrong. Hidden battery wear, thin paint from hail repair, and scraped undercarriages are the risks to check. A pre-purchase inspection in Austin is built around those risks.

We match buyers with independent, vetted mobile inspectors. The inspector comes to wherever the vehicle sits, such as a driveway in Cedar Park, a dealer lot on North Lamar, or an auction yard, if an inspector is available there. You do not need to be there.

Why is battery health the whole decision on a used EV?

On a gas car, a tired engine is a repair. On an EV, a tired battery is the car. The pack is the most expensive part, and it is the part a seller can hide behind a clean dashboard.

A car can look perfect, drive well on a short test loop, and still have far less usable range than the listing implies. Battery capacity can drop with age, heat and fast-charging habits, which is why we read the number instead of guessing from mileage. Ask the seller for charging habits, then verify with a reading.

Our EV inspection is a flat $349. It reads battery state of health directly instead of trusting the range number on the screen. It also tests AC and DC charging, checks the drive unit and the 12V battery, tests driver-assist systems, and looks for open recalls.

  • Battery state of health reading
  • AC and DC charge test
  • Drive unit check
  • 12V battery test
  • ADAS check
  • Open recall lookup

What does "one owner, dealer maintained" actually prove?

Lease returns are common in Austin, and a listing often says one owner with dealer service. That is a good sign. It is not a clean bill of health. Lease terms push a car toward its mileage limit, and wear shows up in places a service record never lists.

A dealer service record shows what was done. It does not show what was skipped, what was deferred, or what happened between visits. Maintenance that was not required by the lease may simply not have been done.

We look at the car, not the paperwork. Tires that do not match, uneven brake wear, worn interior panels and warning codes in the OBD-II scan show what condition the car is really in. Records are one input. Measurements are the check.

Do Hill Country roads damage the undercarriage?

They can. Steep driveways, low-water crossings, gravel county roads and construction zones west of town are hard on low cars. Crossovers and sport trims sit close to the ground, and many have plastic undertrays that hide impact damage.

The inspector gets under and around the vehicle and looks for cracked or missing skid plates, bent control arms, scraped exhaust, leaking oil pans and fresh undercoating sprayed over damage.

Repaired structural damage is the bigger concern. Our guide to checking for frame damage before you buy explains the signs a buyer can spot, and what an inspector measures that you cannot.

How do we spot hail repair on a car from the northern suburbs?

Hail hits the northern suburbs, including Round Rock and Cedar Park, often enough that repair history is worth asking about. A hail-hit car is often repaired and resold, and a repair paid out of pocket may leave nothing on the title to say so.

Good paintless dent repair is nearly invisible to the eye. Panel replacements and repaints are easier to catch if you measure. Paint-depth readings on each panel show where the finish has been reworked. That is a Gold tier measurement.

Hail repair is not always a dealbreaker. A well-done repair on a fair price is fine. What matters is knowing about it before you pay, so you can negotiate or walk. Look at NMVTIS as well. It is designed to protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles, and title history is checked there.

What does I-35 stop-and-go driving do to brakes and tires?

Stop-and-go commutes on I-35 and MoPac mean constant braking. Pads and rotors wear faster, and rotors can warp or groove from heat cycling. Tires wear unevenly when a car lives at low speed with sharp merges.

A seller can say the brakes feel fine. Feel does not tell you how much pad is left. Our Silver tier adds brake pad and rotor measurement, so you get numbers instead of an opinion.

Silver also adds a battery load test and A/C and heater temperature readings. Austin summers make that last one worth knowing before you sign. A weak A/C on a lease return is an easy repair to miss on a mild day.

Does the Texas state inspection replace a pre-purchase inspection?

No, and we do not do it. Since January 1, 2025, most non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection before registration, under House Bill 3297. The Texas Department of Public Safety explains the change on its inspection change notice.

Some counties still require emissions testing for registration. Ask Texas DPS which counties, and confirm current rules before you register. We do not offer state safety or emissions inspections.

Those programs were never a buying tool. A pass did not say anything about the battery, the frame, or the transmission. A pre-purchase inspection does.

Which inspection tier fits an Austin vehicle?

Each tier covers the same systems, and the higher tiers bring in more instruments. The right one depends on the vehicle's price and what you are worried about.

Can you buy in Austin from out of state, and how do you book?

Yes. You do not have to live in Texas to buy here. The inspector meets the seller in Austin, Round Rock or San Marcos, or goes to the dealer lot, depending on inspector availability. The photo-documented PDF report, with 25+ photos, arrives within 24 to 48 hours.

How the remote process works is covered in our out-of-state buyer guide. Use the report to negotiate or to walk away, before any money moves.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a pre-purchase inspection in Austin?

For a used EV, the flat $349 EV inspection is the one built around the battery. Silver adds brake and battery load measurements that suit lease returns and crossovers, and Bronze starts at $249. The table above shows every tier.

Do you do the Texas state inspection or emissions test in Austin?

No. Texas ended most non-commercial safety inspections on January 1, 2025, and we do not offer state safety or emissions inspections. We inspect the condition of a vehicle you are thinking of buying.

Can I get an Austin car inspected if I live out of state?

Yes, depending on inspector availability. The inspector meets the seller in Austin, Round Rock or San Marcos, or visits the dealer lot. You do not need to be there, and the photo PDF arrives within 24 to 48 hours.

Can you tell if an Austin car has hail damage repairs?

Sometimes. Paint-depth readings (Gold) show repainted panels; paintless dent repair can be missed. The full inspection and title history both help.
