A used EV hides its worst problem behind a screen. The battery looks fine on a test drive around the block — degradation, charging faults, and drive-unit wear only show up when someone actually pulls the diagnostic data and pushes the car through a real charge cycle.
Why a ev inspection is different
A combustion pre-purchase checklist is built around oil, belts, and exhaust — none of which exist on an EV. What actually determines whether you overpaid is the high-voltage battery state of health, how the car behaves on a DC fast charger, whether the drive unit is quiet under load, and whether the 12V accessory battery (a completely different, much smaller battery than the one everyone worries about) is about to strand you. We built the EV scope around what actually fails on these cars, not a gas-car list with the engine section deleted.
Scope note: We assess battery health through the vehicle’s own diagnostic readout, charge behavior, and range verification — not a lab teardown or a cell-by-cell voltage map. If the diagnostic data or your make/model tooling suggests a cell-level issue, we flag it for a dealer or EV-specialist shop battery evaluation before you close.

Pre-visit history + software workup
We pull the VIN for open recalls (EV platforms run a heavier recall load than combustion cars — battery, charging, and software recalls are common) and cross-check reported mileage against typical range-loss curves for the model. We also confirm the current software/firmware version against the latest release so we know on-site whether an update is pending.
High-voltage battery diagnostic + charge behavior
We connect available OEM or third-party diagnostic tooling to pull battery state-of-health data where the platform exposes it, and compare the dash-indicated range against the vehicle’s original EPA rating at 100% charge. We inspect the charge port for pin damage or corrosion and, where a charger is accessible on-site, run both an AC (Level 2) and DC fast-charge session to confirm charge rate and taper behave normally.
Drive unit, 12V system, and thermal management
No multi-speed transmission to check, so time goes into what actually fails: drive unit and inverter noise under load, reduction-gear whine, regenerative-braking response and feel, and the 12V accessory battery — a frequent cause of EVs that won’t wake up despite a fine main battery. Battery thermal management and coolant system (where liquid-cooled) checked for leaks and coolant condition.
Road test: regen, ADAS, cabin systems
Road test covers acceleration smoothness, regenerative-braking behavior at multiple settings, one-pedal-driving function where equipped, steering pull, and any driver-assist / ADAS feature the car offers (adaptive cruise, lane-keep, automated parking). Heat pump or cabin-heater function checked, since heating an EV cabin draws directly from the same battery that powers the drivetrain.

What we actually find on these

Battery state of health below 90% on a car under 5 years old
Most EV batteries degrade slower than that in normal use — a reading meaningfully below the expected curve for the age/mileage points at heavy DC fast-charge use, extreme-climate storage, or a battery that has already been serviced. It does not always mean a bad car, but it changes what you should be willing to pay.
Dash range meter reads lower than the diagnostic-reported battery health would suggest
The "guess-o-meter" range estimate adjusts to recent driving style and can undersell a healthy battery, or oversell a degraded one if the last owner babied it. We compare both numbers rather than trusting either alone, since sellers sometimes point only to a favorable range reading.
12V accessory battery past 4 years or reading low voltage
The small 12V battery runs the contactors that wake up the main high-voltage pack. A weak 12V battery is the most common reason a perfectly healthy EV won’t power on — buyers panic thinking the expensive battery failed. Replacement is a low-cost fix ($150–300) but it needs to be caught before it strands you.
Charge port pins showing corrosion or heat discoloration
Repeated DC fast charging generates real heat at the connector. Discoloration or corrosion at the pins can mean a poor connection that will only get worse, and in rare cases points to a charge-session that ran hot. Cheap to inspect, expensive to ignore if it fails mid-charge later.
Rotor surface corrosion despite low mileage
Regenerative braking does most of the stopping on an EV, so friction brakes see far less use than on a combustion car — pads often outlast the car, but rotors that rarely get scrubbed clean can rust and pit, especially in wet climates. Not a safety issue at light corrosion, but it changes the maintenance conversation buyers expect from a "low brake wear" EV.
Drive unit whine or clunk on hard acceleration
With no multi-gear transmission to mask noise, drive unit and reduction-gear wear are more audible than on a combustion car. A whine that changes pitch with speed usually points at bearing wear; a clunk on throttle tip-in points at drivetrain slop. Either is a dealer-diagnostic item before you close, since drive-unit replacement is a major cost.
Software/firmware version several releases behind current
EV manufacturers push meaningful fixes — charging-curve improvements, battery-management tweaks, range-estimation accuracy — via over-the-air updates. A car sitting on old software isn’t broken, but it means you inherit the update process (and any update-related quirks) as your first task after buying.
Open recall for battery, charging system, or software not yet completed
EV platforms carry a heavier recall load than combustion cars, and battery/charging recalls in particular can affect resale and insurability. We check the VIN against the manufacturer’s open-recall list and note anything outstanding — usually a free dealer fix, but one you want scheduled before, not after, you drive it home.
Uneven or accelerated front-tire wear
Instant torque and extra curb weight from the battery pack wear tires faster than a comparable combustion car, and front tires on a front- or dual-motor EV take the brunt of it. Sellers rarely rotate on schedule. A full replacement set is a real near-term cost worth pricing into your offer.

Who runs your inspection
EV inspectors are trained separately from our combustion-vehicle pool — high-voltage safety protocol, EV-specific diagnostic tooling, and manufacturer-specific quirks (Tesla, Rivian, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, GM, and others each expose battery data differently) mean a generalist inspector is the wrong person for this job. We dispatch inspectors with EV-dealer service background or dedicated EV-diagnostic-shop experience, and we route by manufacturer where platform-specific tooling matters. If we do not have an inspector matched to your specific make in your area, we tell you before you book.

Buying from out of state
Out-of-state buyers make up a large share of our EV inspections, since EV inventory is concentrated in a handful of states and buyers often shop nationally for the trim and color they want. We schedule the inspection 3–5 days before pickup or transport so you have time to renegotiate or walk based on the battery-health readout before you commit to shipping. Where the seller has home Level 2 charging available, we run the AC charge test on-site; if only public DC fast-charging is nearby, we coordinate a stop there as part of the visit. The report — including the battery state-of-health number — lands in your inbox before you book transport, and we will get on a call with you if the battery reading or an open recall looks like a deal-breaker.
How ev pricing works
EV inspections are a flat $299 — one price regardless of make or model, from a compact EV hatchback to a full-size electric truck. No tiers, no complexity surcharge for battery diagnostics or the charge test; those are included in every EV inspection because they are the whole point of this scope. The only adjustment is if a DC fast-charger is not reasonably accessible near the seller’s location, in which case we will let you know before booking whether that portion of the test needs to be rescheduled at pickup instead.
Frequently asked
Can you tell me the exact battery health percentage?
We report the state-of-health figure the vehicle’s own diagnostic system exposes, where the platform makes that data available, plus a range-vs-original-EPA-rating comparison from the charge test. Not every manufacturer exposes a precise percentage through consumer-accessible tooling — where that’s the case, we document range and charge behavior instead and say plainly what we could and could not measure.
Do you do a full lab teardown or cell-level test on the battery?
No. We assess battery health through available diagnostics, charge behavior, and range verification — the same methods a dealer service department uses for a pre-sale check. A cell-by-cell lab teardown is a different (and far more expensive) service; if our findings suggest one is warranted, we tell you and point you to where to get it.
Will you actually charge the car during the inspection?
Yes — both an AC (Level 2) session and, where a DC fast-charger is reasonably accessible, a fast-charge session. We document charge rate, taper behavior, and any error codes. This is where charge-port or battery-management issues actually show up, so we don’t skip it.
What if the car needs a software update?
We note the current firmware version against the latest release and flag if an update is pending. We do not perform the update ourselves — that’s typically an over-the-air push from the manufacturer or a dealer visit — but you’ll know it’s coming before you buy.
Do you check the 12V battery separately from the main battery?
Yes. The 12V accessory battery is a small, separate battery that powers the contactors waking up the high-voltage pack, and it’s a common — and cheap — failure point that gets mistaken for a "dead EV battery." We check its age, voltage, and terminal condition every time.
Why don’t you check the oil or timing belt?
Because they don’t exist. EVs have no engine oil, no timing belt, and no exhaust system — the standard combustion checklist simply doesn’t apply. Every item in our EV scope is specific to what actually wears or fails on an electric drivetrain.
Do you check for open recalls?
Yes — we run the VIN against the manufacturer’s open-recall list before the visit. EV platforms tend to carry more battery, charging, and software recalls than combustion cars, so this is a standard part of the pre-visit workup, not an add-on.
How is this different from your Gold tier?
Gold is built around a combustion drivetrain: engine, transmission, exhaust, fluids. EV scope replaces all of that with battery diagnostics, charge testing, drive-unit and 12V-battery checks, and software/recall review — a different inspector skill set and different tooling entirely.
What if you find something major mid-inspection?
We call you on the spot with the diagnostic readout and photos. If the battery health or a drive-unit finding looks like a deal-breaker, you decide whether to continue, renegotiate, or walk — you’re billed for time on-site, not the full report, on aborted inspections.
How long does an EV inspection take?
Typically 90 minutes to two hours on-site, plus time for the charge test if a charger is on-site (add 20–30 minutes for the AC session; DC fast-charge testing is quicker but depends on charger availability). Report PDF lands within 24 hours.
